The Mailvelope API for Posteo makes sending and reading end-to-end encrypted emails even easier: The automatic key search automatically finds your contacts’ public keys. Email attachments are also automatically encrypted.
In this help article, we show you how to activate the Mailvelope API. You will also find out how to transfer keys to a new keychain.

How to activate the Mailvelope API for Posteo
- Click the Mailvelope symbol in the browser
- Click Options
- Click Options
- Click List of Mail Providers
- For Posteo, click Edit
Tip: The button appears when your move the cursor over the Posteo entry
- Click the switch next to API
- Confirm the change by clicking OK
Go back to the webmail interface. You will now see a second button in the webmail interface’s menu bar, to open the email editor: Compose and encrypt.
How to transfer existing keys to a new keychain
After activating the API, Mailvelope creates a new keychain for the site posteo.de. To continue to use the key from your previous keychain, click
Options in Mailvelope and proceed as follows:
- Under Key admin, click the Key ring menu (at the top left)
- Select Mailvelope
- Click Export
- Click Save
Important: Beforehand, do not click on a key - Save the file all_keys.asc to your computer
- Close the export dialogue box and again click the Key ring menu (at the top left) in Mailvelope
- Select posteo.de (Posteo)
- Click Import keys
- Click Select a key text file to import.
- Select the file you saved in step 5
- Click Import
