How do I manually set up Posteo in Thunderbird?

Setup

When starting for the first time after installation, Thunderbird asks for all necessary data. Go through with the assistant, entering the access data for your account in the dialogue boxes.

  • Choose a sender name and enter your Posteo email address.
  • Choose “IMAP” as the Incoming Mail Server and enter “posteo.de” in the fields for Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server.
  • For the username, insert your Posteo email address.
  • The “Account Identifier” can be set to whatever you like.
  • After setting up the account, in the Thunderbird menu please click “Extras”, and then “Accounts”. Click the “Server Settings” and select that the connection should be encrypted using “TLS”. (With some antivirus software, entering “SSL” is necessary.)
  • Then (on the left) click “Outgoing Mail Server SMTP”, change the entry for Posteo and choose “TLS” as the encryption method.
  • To access your account for the first time as well as to send a message for the first time, you will need to enter your password. If you choose to save the password, you will not be asked for it again.

Adding an account

If you already use Thunderbird for other email accounts, proceed as follows in order to set up your Posteo email address.

  • Start the Assistant for setting up an email account, by clicking “Extras” (in the menu), then “Accounts”, then “Add Account”.
  • Choose a sender name and enter your Posteo email address.
  • Choose “IMAP” as the Incoming Mail Server and enter “posteo.de” in the fields Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server.
  • For the username, enter your complete Posteo email address.
  • The “Account Identifier” can be set to whatever you like.
  • After creating the account and ending the assistant, please click in Account Overview on the “Server Settings” of your Posteo account and select that the connection should be encrypted using “TLS”. (With some antivirus software, entering “SSL” is necessary.)
  • Now the Outgoing Mail Server just needs to be set up. Click “Outgoing Mail Server SMTP” (on the left) and then Add.
  • For “Server”, enter “posteo.de” and enter your Posteo email address as the username. Select “TLS” as the encryption method. Confirm what you have entered with “OK”.
  • Then, in the Account Overview, click “Close” on the entry for your Posteo account and select the newly-created settings for Posteo for the “Outgoing Mail Server”.
  • To access your account for the first time as well as to send a message for the first time, you will need to enter your password. If you choose to save the password, you will not be asked for it again.
