You can change your email address by going to your account settings and sending a request to Posteo support. There are two steps involved:
How to create an alias
Follow the steps indicated on the screenshot below to create an alias with your preferred email address. Detailed instructions for creating alias addresses can be found in our help article How do I add or remove an email alias?.
- Open Settings.
- Click on .
- Open the Email aliases menu.
- Create a new alias by clicking on Add new alias.
- Enter your preferred email address for the alias.
- Select a Posteo domain.
- Click on Create alias now.
You have successfully created your email alias. Starting immediately, the address will be available to send and receive emails. If your desired address is already taken, please choose another alias.
How to send emails from your new address by default
If you'd like the new address to be selected as the default sender for all emails, follow these steps:
- Open Settings
- Select .
- In the list of available identities, click on the email address that you'd like to use as your default sender.
- Check the box next to Set default.
- Confirm the change by clicking Save.
Done. Starting immediately, the newly created address will be the default sender for all emails.
How to rename your account
- Open Settings.
- Click on .
- Click on Change username.
- In the New email address field, enter your preferred address.
- In the menu next to it, select your preferred domain.
- Enter your password to confirm.
- By clicking on Save, you will implement the changes.
You will be automatically logged out of your Posteo account.
Done. Your email account has been renamed. Starting immediately, you can log in with your new email address. Your password does not change.
If you use your Posteo account in an email client, then after changing your address you will receive an error message when attempting to retrieve and send emails. To fix this, go to your email client's settings and enter your new Posteo address.
Tip: In many email clients, the username is entered in several places, once for the incoming server (IMAP) and once for the outgoing server (SMTP).
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my previous email address?
Your previous email address will be converted into an email alias.
This address will continue to receive emails.
If you'd no longer like to use your previous address, you can delete the alias address.
Does changing my Posteo address cost money?
Changing your address is free of charge. Additional costs could apply for the new alias address, however, if you already use at least two alias addresses. If creating a new address will entail an additional monthly charge, you will be notified in Step 1, when creating the alias.
