How do I set up synchronisation of contacts with the address book in Apple Mac OS X?

  • Open your Mac address book (Contacts).
  • In the menu, click (at the top left) on “Contacts” and then “Preferences”.
  • Click the “Accounts” tab and then (at the bottom left) on the plus symbol (+).
  • For “Account type”, choose “CardDAV”.
  • Enter your Posteo email address (username, lower case) and your Posteo password.
  • The server address is “posteo.de”.
  • To finish, click “Create” and close the address book settings.

Finished. You now have a new address book containing all your Posteo contacts. From now on, you can drag contacts from your local address book to your Posteo address book and vice-versa.

Our tests have determined that address book synchronisation with Mac OS X versions 10.6 (Snow Leopard), 10.7 (Lion), 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and 10.9 (Mavericks) works fine.

With 10.7 (Lion), 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and 10.9 (Mavericks) some of the settings need to be entered differently. The server has to be entered as “posteo.de”. For the username, you need to enter your Posteo email address including the “@posteo.de”.

Pro Tip

The Mac address book is very sensitive to the technical quality of its entries. If a contact is technically not 100% properly entered, the address book will not synchronise the contact. Our webmail address book corrects such technically defective contacts. You just need to edit the contact once in Posteo webmail (you don’t need to change anything) and then save it again, in order for the contact to be repaired and once again synchronise with the Mac address book.

You can repair all contacts quickly and easily using this method. If there are a lot, it is possible to target those which are defective. To do so, you need to look at the Mac address book’s communications with our server. The Mac keeps a register and will show the contacts if you start “Terminal” and enter the following command: “tail -f /var/log/system.log”. Then, when you start your address book you can see in “Terminal” the register and the contacts classified as defective, which you need to repair using Posteo webmail so that synchronising works properly.
