How do I delete a folder?

In this help article, you will learn how to delete an email folder in Posteo’s webmail interface.

Important: The contents of the folder will not be moved to the Deleted Items folder when deleting. Please make sure in advance that the folder only contains emails that you actually want to delete as they will be deleted immediately.

Deleting folders in Posteo webmail

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Folders.
  3. Select the folder that you would like to delete.

Tip: You can open folder management directly from your inbox. To do so, click on the cog in the bottom-left and then on Manage folders.

  1. In the middle of the green bar located in the upper-right, click on the trash can icon.

That's it! You have completely deleted the folder and its contents.

Do you synchronise your emails with a smartphone or an email client? Then the deleted folder will also be removed there: This typically happens during the next synchronisation and at the latest when the program is restarted.

Tips & Troubleshooting

Delete subfolders first

You can only delete a folder once it no longer contains any subfolders. Therefore, delete or move all subfolders before deleting.

Deleting folders from Posteo migrations and Posteo backups

Did you use the Posteo migration service or receive a backup and would like to delete the folder? First, empty the folder by moving your data to other folders and deleting all subfolders of your migration or backup folder. Afterwards, you can delete the migration or backup folder as described above.

I accidentally deleted a folder

If you have accidentally deleted a folder, we can try to restore it from a backup. We create daily security backup of your account and store it for 7 days. Read about how to request that a backup be restored and under which conditions this is possible here.

Privacy Notice

Deleted data will remain for up to 7 days on security backups made by Posteo. After that, it is completely deleted from Posteo’s servers.
