How can I retrieve my password in Apple Mac OS X?

Have you forgotten your Posteo password? If you fetch your emails via IMAP or POP3 with Apple Mail or Outlook for Mac, you can retrieve your password on your Mac. You can also have your password displayed for the macOS Calendar or Contacts app.

How to retrieve your Posteo password in macOS

  1. In the search bar of your Mac, enter Keychain Access and open the program.
    The search bar can be found in the upper-right of your screen next to the small magnifying glass.
  2. Click on Login in the left panel of the keychain window.
  3. Click on All items.
  4. In the search bar of Keychain Access, enter your Posteo address with "@posteo.de" added at the end.
    Example:johnexample@posteo.net@posteo.de

In the list, you will see all matching entries. The entries for your email account have the names:

  • com.apple.account.IMAP.password or
  • com.apple.account.SMTP.password
  1. Open the entry by double clicking on it.
  1. Tick the box next to Display password
  1. Enter your macOS password.
    2. Tip: The macOS password is used for logging in to your Mac.
  2. Click on OK
Your password will now be displayed.
