How do I set up Posteo in an email client? (POP3, IMAP and SMTP)

If you would to set up Posteo in a local email client, you generally don’t need to do much: The most popular email clients Thunderbird and Outlook (post 2007) are able to configure automatically.

For iOS we provide configuration data here. For Mac Mail we offer the following instructions and for Android smartphones we have also prepared instructions.

Setting up Posteo in an email client (whether on PC, smartphone or tablet) is different for each client, however, you will always need the following details:

Server name: posteo.de
Username: yourusername@posteo.net
Password: Your personal password

Important: only encrypted connections (TLS, STARTTLS) can be made with Posteo. Should your email client only support obsolete versions of TLS (TLS 1.0), synchronisation with Posteo is not possible. Update your software in order to connect with Posteo. We recommend using TLS instead of STARTTLS if possible.

Does your app or device no longer offer updates? Posteo support is happy to help you find an app for your device that supports modern encryption standards.

The outgoing mail server (SMTP) requires authentication.

In case your email client asks: The password will be checked “normal” or “plain”. The password can also be transmitted unencrypted, because it is requested over a connection that is already encrypted.

The port settings depend upon the type of encryption:

Outgoing mail server (SMTP):
with SSL/TLS encryption using port 465, or
With STARTTLS using port 587

Incoming mail server (IMAP):
with SSL/TLS encryption using port 993, or
With STARTTLS using port 143

Incoming mail server (POP3):
with SSL/TLS encryption using port 995, or
With STARTTLS using port 110

The standard IMAP folders we have set up:
For sent emails: Sent
For deleted emails: Trash
For drafts: Drafts
